The President of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, recalled how a gang of criminals raided his rural homestead and raped his wife more than a decade ago.
Zuma made the shocking revelation an African National Congress (ANC) election briefing in Johannesburg on May 5, 2014, Monday, in an attempt to explain a $23million security upgrade, which has been funded by the South African taxpayers.
He further added that the culprits were “arrested, charged, convicted,” but did not mention which of the four wives he had at the time was the victim.
The explanation became necessary due to the upcoming nationwide elections on May 7, 2014, Wednesday. Despite being confident in his victory and a second five-year term, Zuma made such a move to weaken the fierce criticism over needless spending.
Nevertheless, the recent polls show that the ruling ANC is expected to get around 63% of votes, mainly due to its anti-apartheid past. So, many people are expected to shun the elections, disillusioned with the ruling party and seeing no reliable political alternative.
