KENYA: 5,000 TO BE TESTED FOR HIV ON VALENTINE'S DAY.

A non-governmental organisation is planning to test at least 5,000 people for HIV-Aids and distribute 200,000 condoms over the valentine weekend.
Aids Healthcare Foundation-Kenya yesterday said it will conduct free mass testing and distribution of condoms to promote safe sex practices during the Valentine week and to mark the International Condom Day.
AHF-Kenya prevention and advocacy manager Mary Nyaguthii said a research has revealed that there has been a low uptake of condoms because of 'mpango wa kando' relationships prevalent among married couples.
She said this has resulted in the rise of HIV-Aids among married couples to 9.1 per cent, far above the national prevalence that stands at 5.6 per cent.
Nyaguthii said they are targeting to distribute four million condoms by the end of the year and test at least 250,000 people. She said 172,000 people were tested and 1.5 million condoms distributed last year.
Nyaguthii said they have planned several activities for five days in Nairobi, Mombasa and Makueni counties to create awareness and encourage people to get tested and use condoms.
She said under the theme 'Love is the Best Protection', the condoms will be distributed and testing done for free. Nyaguthii said those found with the virus will also be put under free treatment and care.
She said currently, AHF-Kenya offers free treatment to 10,000 people found with the virus after testing.
