12 Years a Slave, Barkhad Abdi Win BAFTA Awards

Steve McQueen's drama wins Britain's highest film honor.

The 2014 BAFTA Awards, better known as Britain's version of the Oscars, took place over the holiday weekend and there were a few surprises among the winners.

12 Years a Slave took home the night's top honor of Best Film (no surprise there), with Chiwetel Ejiofor winning Best Actor. Captain Phillips' Barkhad Abdi, a Hollywood newcomer, won Best Supporting Actor, beating out Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender.

Jennifer Lawrence beat Lupita Nyong'o for Best Supporting Actress, while Gravity took home the most awards, including Best British Film and Best Director.

The awards were a warm up to the Academy Awards on March 2. For a complete list of winners.
