OBAMA'S HALF BROTHER RUNS FOR ELECTION IN KENYA
President
Barack Obama's Kenyan half-brother has launched his own political
career by announcing his intention to run for a Kenyan county
gubernatorial seat in the upcoming March 4 elections.
Malik Obama, 54, who shares a father with the US president, said in an interview late on Wednesday that the achievements of his brother have "inspired and challenged" him to get into active politics in his homeland.
"When I look at the success that my brother has had in the US, I feel I would have let down my people if I do not follow in his footsteps and end their suffering through dedicated, honest and focused leadership," Malik said in his ancestral home of Kogelo in western Kenya.
The trained economist said he is the right candidate to deal with the "endless cycle of poverty and unemployment that bedevils my people". "I can confidently say that of all the people who are vying for the position, I am the best placed candidate ... by virtue of my second name alone, I have the connections to bring development to Siaya," he said, referring to his home county 100 km from the lakeside city of Kisumu.
Although he says he is charting his own path, Malik Obama is using his now famous second name to try and get an edge over his competitors, who include the younger brother of Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a country polarized by dominant political parties, Malik Obama is running as an independent.
He said his links to Washington will help him clinch the seat. "Why would my people settle for a local connection when they have a direct line to the White House," he said as he weaved his way through a group of supporters, the slogan "Obama here, Obama there" looming on posters.

CZECH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE HAS A FULL FACE TATTOO
When the candidates for president of the Czech Republic meet in a televised debate tonight, by far the most colorful contender will be Vladimir Franz. His entire head is tattooed. Despite his wildly unorthodox appearance Franz has a respectable 11.4 percent of the popular vote in opinion polls, placing him third among the nine candidates, a position that could make him a Czech king maker. Franz, 53, holds a law degree, is a Czech drama professor, a painter and a prolific opera and theater composer. He also has tattoos covering 90 percent of his body, a variety of body piercings and dyed blue hair. "Today is the biggest day of my art career and of my political career," Franz told ABC News. "I have a world opera premiere of Karel Capek's novel 'War With the Newts' in the National Opera at 7 p.m. and a national TV debate at 8 p.m." Voting will take place this weekend and a runoff is scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 25 and 26. The runoff will likely feature leftist Milos Zeman and his right-wing rival, Jan Fischer. Franz is running as an independent whose political views are far less extreme than his carney sideshow looks. And he is proud of his looks. "My tattoos are my private little garden. They are not a handicap, they are added value," Franz said. "Elections are not a beauty contest. It is all about tolerance." He is intent on expanding his work to the art of politics. "It is not time to be an artist only in the Czech Republic now, you have to act as an citizen. I think a piece of pure heart would not harm our politics," Franz said. He rhetoric is that of a grass roots politician. "I want to return the state to its citizens. I want to be an ambassador of the people in high politics. I want to fight for the people," he says as if he's said it before during his campaign around the country over the past few months. "My four pillars are: education, culture, morality and tolerance," Franz states. Franz's appeal lies primarily in the country's under-30 voters where he polls one-third of the vote, making him the most popular of the nine candidates. "He is not hungry for power like other candidates," said Jan Herzmann, managing partner of PPM factum pollster. "All he wants to do is cultivate Czech political scene." "Everything about this colorful candidate is different. His appearance, lack of political experience, and the fact that he was pushed by his friends and fans to the presidential race. He is the only strong opposition to the current Czech political scene," Herzmann said. Franz is attracting support from some establishment folks as well as the youth. Pavel Kohout, a leading economist, offered his services for free. "I respect him for a number of reasons, but the fact that he is not compromised in any way singles him out as the best candidate," Kohout said. |

PATIENCE JONATHAN HEADING TO SPAIN FOR TREATMENT
Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is scheduled to visit
hospitals in Germany and Spain in a few days, according to medical sources in
Abuja.
Mrs. Jonathan, who returned to Nigeria last year after a prolonged stay at a German hospital, is officially headed for Spain but our source said she is scheduled for medical treatment in Germany to ready her fit enough so that she can attend an African First ladies event scheduled for Addis Ababa later in the month. Since her tumultuous return from her extended trip abroad last year, Mrs. Jonathan has remained largely marooned inside the Presidential villa only attending few public events and church services in Abuja. Although SaharaReporters fully reported on her medical excursion in Germany throughout her absence from Nigeria, she claimed not to have been in a hospital. Our source said the First Lady has been struggling with a variety of ailments that have refused to go away, some of them being complications relating to the surgery she embarked upon during her medical trip abroad. Concerning Mrs. Jonathan’s trip to Spain, it is known that she had previously attended "health farms" in the Malaga area of the European country. It is there that a former Nigeria First Lady, Stella Obasanjo, tragically lost her life in a cosmetic surgery operation in 2005. |

Arts & Life: Rising Star Writer Chibundu Onuzo
Chibundu Onuzo
You are a celebrated writer. Have you always been interested in writing and literature?
Always is a long time. I don’t imagine as a baby I was much interested in literature. I’ve been told that in those first years of my life, I was more concerned with chewing the pages of books than deciphering the words in them. But once I was taught to read, I remember enjoying it immensely. I soon discovered the art of reading silently without sounding the words and from then, I was off. I could sit for hours reading and it was an interest that my parents encouraged. There was always an ample supply of books lying around the house.
One of my favourite subjects in Primary school was Composition. I really loved those essays where we had to describe what we’d done over our summer holidays. Of course in mine, there would always be some jara. I would add a little Maggi to make the story sweeter.
How have you handled your popularity (fame)? In other words, what keeps you humble?
Well as I’m not exactly famous, there’s not much to handle. I’ve been recognised in the street only once and this was so unexpected and flattering that I instantly became a fan of my fan. I’m just starting out. I’m still learning and pride isn’t a useful attribute in an apprentice. You’re always learning and re-seeing things as a writer. Once you started thinking you’ve arrived, you’re probably past your peak.
Aside of writing and blogging, what else do you enjoy doing?
I sing and I play the piano. For about a year now, I’ve been playing at my church in London and it’s been a great experience. The band there is very professional and they’ve really pushed me. I’m also a quintessential Nigerian in Diaspora. I love everything to do with Nigeria and I scour for news of the country on the internet. I regularly live stream Channels evening news and I follow many journalists based in Lagos and Abuja. At every opportunity I get, I talk about politics to anyone and anything that will listen.
Aside of Christianity and your church, what motivates you?
Motivation is an odd thing to unravel. Being alive is motivation enough for pursuing your goals. Sometimes, not every day, but sometimes I wake up and it hits me, I’m alive and some of my classmates are dead. I’m only twenty one but I know people who haven’t made it to this age and it galvanizes me. You understand the wisdom of David when he says in Psalms, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
If you could tell the President of Nigeria anything, what would it be and why?
I would say to him, Mr. President I would have voted for you if I was resident in Nigeria in the 2011 elections. You set a new trend in democracy in our country. You made it populist, you made the people feel for the first time that their voices had been heard at the ballot and you also brought the resource control hat back into fashion. Now it’s time to set more lasting trends. We want anti-corruption to become fashionable again as it was under Murtala Mohammed. We want poverty alleviation to trend as it did under Lateef Jakande. And where there has been no marked precedent, we want you to blaze the trail. And one last thing, Mr. President, sack some of your advisers and start listening to the shoeless.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? What are you currently working on?
Alive, by God’s grace. I’m working on my second book and I’m also applying for a placement in advertising and I also very much want to move back to the motherland in a couple of years and put my hands to the plough. This nation building requires hard work and sweat from all of us. So I suppose, in short, we’ll see.
Who are your heroes? Have you any?
My parents are definitely two people I look up to. They have walked the talk quietly and with little fanfare for the twenty one years I have known them. So many people have graduated because of their sponsorship, so many have lived in our house, so many have benefitted from their lives. Last year, my mother started a charity school in G.R.A called Little Acorns. Both she and my father live on the principle that it is better to give than receive.
You are well travelled and well educated, any special memory you want to share?
I’m not as well travelled as I want to be. Certainly in the future I would like to travel more within Nigeria. I’m hoping my NYSC year will give me this opportunity. Just in case the person who handles posting is reading this, please send me to either Ondo or Ekiti. I would love to see firsthand what Governor Mimiko and Governor Fayemi are doing because I’ve heard many good things.
As to fun travel memories, my father is Igbo and so we all went to Ubulu, our village, every Christmas and we loved it, including my Yoruba mother. We would go and see the masquerades dance in the village square and once, a particularly ferocious one chased my cousins and I with a whip. We were so scared, we ran into the first house we saw. It belonged to a complete stranger who thankfully, had left his house unlocked. We ran in and bolted the door until the masquerade gave up and left. Just the fact that we sheltered in a stranger’s house with no fear and no need to ask permission, reminds me of all the things I love about our people.
Your parents must be proud of you. How does this make you feel?
Thankful. I respect my parents a lot and I just pray that the only tears my life will ever bring to them will be tears of joy.
PDP BoT CHAIR: AHMADU ALI OUT
Former Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ahmadu Ali is out of the race for the Board of Trustees (BoT) chairmanship.
A source said that because he hailed from the North Central same as the BoT’s secretary, Sen. Awalid Jibri disqualified the ex-education minister. The party’s attempt to elect a successor to ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, ended in a statement in Abuja Tuesday night.
The source said, a new chairman that will emerge, would not be through consensus. The member who would not want his name in print, however, said at no time in the cause of its 42nd meeting was the issue of consensus discussed, rather, the meeting concentrated on getting things right that will produce a credible chairman when election comes. The source who is a diplomat, said: “When the time for election comes there will be no consensus as whoever emerges, will be voted in.
“There was no effort to get consensus at all. That did not even arise at the meeting because we wanted to get things right. The source noted that despite the stronger contenders, the fight will be between the former Senate President Ken Namani and Chief Tony Anenih. He also disclosed that the issue of age also dominated the discussion.
“If you are below 50, you cannot be a member except you are there by the office you hold like the Speaker of the House of Representatives, he is not yet 50, but he is a member of BoT as a result of the position he holds. “A lot of people who are presently members is as a result of their nominations from their state government and that is not what the constitution of the party says”, the source said.
