JUST IN: Atletico Madrid Beat Chelsea To Qualify For Champions League Final

The Diego Simeone side produced an inspired display of counter-attacking football to beat Jose Mourinho's team and set up an all-Spanish final against city rivals Real Madrid.
Goals from Adrian Lopez in the 44th minute, a penalty from Diego Costa and Arda Turan gave Atletico a 3-1 aggregate victory after last week's goalless draw in Madrid.

The result put the 2013 Europa Cup winners into the final of Europe's elite competition for the first time since 1974.
Chelsea took the lead after 36 minutes when former Atletico favourite Fernando Torres scored with a deflected shot, but the goal inspired the La Liga leaders who will meet their neighbours in the first European final to feature two clubs from the same city in Lisbon in May.
Commenting on the result after the match, Peter Okoye of P-Square, a Chelsea fan, tweeted on his twitter handle: "Weldon #Teamchelsea. Still proud of the blues. #CFC"
Argentine Legend, Diego Maradona was among those that watched the explosive match in London tonight.
Jose Mourinho said after the match: Jose: "The players gave everything tonight. I am happy with them. They lost, but they lost against a very good team. That's football'.
"Next season will be better than this season - that's our objective - the objective of everybody.
"We had a slight advantage in the first half in the way we controlled the game. 1-1 in the second half made it completely open.
"Were Atletico the best side over two legs? Probably yes.
"Congratulations to them because they are a very good side and what they are doing in Spanish league is fantastic."

Mothers Of The Kidnapped School Girls Protest At National Assembly
Aggrieved mothers and other indigenes of Chibok, Borno State, yesterday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, staged a protest to demand the immediate rescue or release of the more than 200 secondary school girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on April 14.

The protesters, most of them members of the Kibaku Development Association, Chibok, converged at Eagle Square in Nigeria’s capital. From there, they marched to the National Assembly to submit a protest letter. The women were led into the premises of the national legislature by a group of senior female police officers.

Senators Barnabas Gemade and Helen Esuene received the protesters, telling them that the Senate was considering a motion in relation to the abducted girls. The two senators assured that the content of the Senate’s resolution would be communicated to the women as soon as possible. The senators appealed to the protesters to calm down and show restraint, pledging that everything would be done to secure the release of the girls in due course.

Some of the protesting women, who were all dressed in black, seemed unimpressed by the senators’ tepid words. A number of the women betrayed their emotion and wept profusely, a few of them rolling on the ground.

Panic As Aero Contractors Aircraft Mistakenly Lands At Enugu Government House,
There was a short period of tension at the Enugu Government House on Tuesday as a helicopter belonging to Aero Contractors mistakenly landed at the Governor’s Lodge.

The erroneous landing caused panic among the residents and staff who mistook it for terrorists.

Three occupants of the helicopter – two pilots and an Engineer were immediately detained for alleged security breaches.

DailyPost learnt that security men at the Governor’s lodge took positions on sighting the helicopter since the mission of the occupants was not known to them.

Governor Sullivan Chime was said to be present in the lodge when the helicopter landed suddenly on the carpet-grassed open space in front of the lodge.

The three occupants were immediately arrested and later handed over to the State Police Command by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Fidelis Ogarabe, Chief Security Officer to Governor Sullivan Chime for interrogation.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Chukwudi Achife, in a statement on the issue, said: “At about 10.30 am today (Tuesday), a helicopter bearing the markings of Aero Contractors landed without permission at the Governor’s lodge.

“The mission of the visitors was unknown to the government. After preliminary inquiries, the Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Mr. Fidelis Ogarebe, handed the three occupants of the aircraft – two pilots and one Engineer over to the State Police Command for further investigations”.

However, a source told DailyPost that the pilot of the chartered helicopter mistook the Government House for the State House of Assembly complex where he was to land to convey the corpse of a deceased member of the old Anambra State House of Assembly, Sir Andrew Okonkwo Umeoji to his Aguata country home after a valedictory session held in his honour by the state lawmakers Tuesday morning.

Sir Umeoji represented Aguata North Central in the old Anambra State House of Assembly in 1983. He died recently and his funeral programme commenced on Tuesday with a valedictory session held in his honour by members of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

“The valedictory session was held for him this morning and after the event presided over by the Speaker, Chief Eugene Odoh, the casket was rather conveyed to Anambra State in a motorcade since the helicopter did not land at the Legislative building which is about 200 meters away from the Government House”, spokesman of the State Assembly, Mr. Jonas Ugwuanyi said.

He said that the House of Assembly premises was cleared for the helicopter to land but it could not be seen until the end of the valedictory session.

But unknown to the lawmakers, the helicopter had landed in the Governor’s lodge where the crew members were detained for allegedly breaching the security of the Government House.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said when contacted that the command had commenced investigations with a view to finding out “why the aircraft landed there vis-à-vis who invited them, where they came from amongst other things”.

Security had been beefed up at the Government House since members of the pro-Biafra Movement, Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, invaded the Enugu State seat of power at about 4.30am on March 8, 2014.

The children of the deceased second republic lawmaker including the current chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, Mr. Chukwuma Umeoji and his sister who is a senior staff of Zenith Bank were said to have contacted the Government House to seek the release of the helicopter and the crew members but their pleas were reportedly turned down as the Governor who was said to have been frightened by the strange visitors, reportedly directed that the incident be thoroughly investigated.

Kenya’s President Signs Kenya Polygamy Law, Permits Men To Marry More Women

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law a controversial marriage bill legalising polygamy.
It brings civil law, where a man was only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners.
Controversy surrounded an amendment to the bill, supported by many male MPs, allowing men to take more wives without consulting existing spouses.
Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval.
‘Demeaning’
Last month, female MPs walked out of parliament in disgust after their male counterparts voted through the amendment.
They argued that a decision to take on another wife would affect the whole family, including the financial position of other spouses.
The bill was also opposed by Christian leaders who urged the president not to sign it into law, saying it undermined Christian principles of marriage and family.
“The tone of that bill, if it becomes law, would be demeaning to women since it does not respect the principle of equality of spouses in the institution of marriage,” Archbishop Timothy Ndambuki, from the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), was quoted by Kenya’s Standard newspaper as saying.
The marriage legislation has been under discussion for several years and some initial proposals were scrapped at committee stages.
It has abolished the practice of unofficial traditional marriages which were never registered and could be ended without any legal divorce proceedings.
But plans to ban the payment of bride prices were dropped – although a person must be 18 to marry and this now applies to all cultures.

simple and effective ways to reduce cholesterol naturally
You have probably heard that our diet is among the most critical factors to our health and cardiovascular system. Cholesterol is a compound that lines the inner walls of blood vessels and gradually reduces the space in which blood can pass. We know this process by the name “blood pressure”. Consequences of high blood pressure are cardiovascular diseases and a real danger of heart attack. High blood pressure results due to other factors, but there is no doubt that cholesterol is the main one.
You can read more about how to reduce high blood pressure naturally in the post I’ve written in the past.

To improve your blood cholesterol levels and to lower cholesterol naturally, there are some simple but vital habits that should be adhered to. Here are tips to bring your cholesterol to the right level:
1. Read beyond the label ‘low-fat’
Even foods claiming to be low in fat can contribute significantly to your cholesterol levels. Many times the wording on the labels refer to the amount for a portion, or for 100 grams or for a pack. But if for example you need to consume 300 grams of this food to feel satisfied, you need to re-examine the meaning of ‘low-fat. At the bottom line, don’t let slogans fool you – check the nutritional values in numbers.
2. Eat lots of fiber
Studies have found that increased consumption of soluble fiber, like the one found in fruits and vegetables, by 5 to 10 grams a day, can lead to a decrease of 5% in the level of cholesterol in the blood. 5 to 10 grams is just to add a fruit or a vegetable a day – not a great effort with but with a great benefit.
3. Eat eggs in moderation
The recommended daily consumption of cholesterol is 300 mg for healthy people. A single egg contains about 213 mg cholesterol, which leaves almost another available 90 mg. This means you can eat eggs, but you need to plan the rest of your meals accordingly. For example, on days when you eat eggs, reduce cholesterol consumption from other sources.
4. Start the morning the right way
Instead of the usual cereal, prefer to start the day with oatmeal or bran. It is common to claim that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you have to give it its proper place. One cup of oatmeal or bran has about 2 grams of soluble fiber and 4 grams of fiber in total. Add pieces of fruit for a sweet taste and your anti-cholesterol breakfast is ready. With a nice amount of soluble fiber, your cholesterol level will remain low.
5. Try to avoid saturated fat
You have probably heard about the great damage of saturated fat that increases the level of cholesterol in your blood. The American Heart Association recommends to limit the amount of saturated fats you eat to less than 7% of your total daily calories.  That means, for example, that if you need about 2,000 calories a day, then maximum 140 of them should come from saturated fats.  That’s about 16 grams of saturated fats a day. Common foods that contain saturated fat come mainly from animal sources, for example: butter, fatty beef, lamb or pork, poultry with skin, lard and cream. Also pastries and many baked and fried foods can contain high levels of saturated fats. Some plant foods, such as palm oil and coconut oil also contain saturated fats, but don’t contain cholesterol.
6. Know the sources of trans-fat
Trans-fat exists naturally in meat and dairy products and can be created by a chemical process that converts normal fat to trans-fat. Trans-fat is considered one of the worst industrial fats in general, and one of the main culprits of high cholesterol. Be sure to know the foods you consume and their trans-fat content. Try to remove it from your menu or at least minimize its consumption. Foods containing trans-fat are various pastries containing margarine, but you can check the amount of trans-fat on all food items, as manufacturers are committed by law to report the amounts of fat.
7. Eat Fish
Meat is an essential part of many people’s diet, but it should not be exclusive. Beef is rich in fats that raise cholesterol, while fish, such as salmon and tuna, for example, are rich in omega -3 that actually helps lower cholesterol. Therefore, it is recommended to add fish to your weekly menu twice or three times at the expense of meat. It will also diversify your nutrition and help you fight cholesterol.
8. Consume the right fats
As we know, not all fats increase cholesterol and there are fats that help to prevent its damage and raise the good cholesterol (HDL). Foods such as olive oil, avocado, fish, flaxseed, and nuts contain essential fat to our health such as omega-3. This fatty acid acts, among other things, to lower the amount of triglycerides in the blood and reduces cholesterol. Eat these foods at the expense of foods rich in fats that contribute to bad cholesterol (LDL), and thus you will earn double advantage. Find here more information about the amazing health benefits of onega-3.
9. Tropical oils
Palm oil and coconut oil received a good reputation in recent years since they plant oils, and indeed I’ve written in the past about the many health benefits of coconut oil. However, it was found that palm oil, for example, has 80% saturated fat. The World Health Organization as well as health organizations of countries like USA, Canada and The UK, began to recommend to significantly reduce the consumption of coconut oil due to the high levels of saturated fat in it. So although coconut oil has indeed several health benefits and is a good substitute for margarine for example, you still need to consume it in moderation.
10. Recommended foods
The above tips give some examples of foods that you may want to avoid or reduce their consumption, but here you will find some foods that can contribute to good cholesterol levels (HDL) and lower the bad cholesterol (LDL):
Almonds – the almond skin contains compounds that prevent the oxidation of LDL molecules thereby preventing damage to the blood vessel wall.
Avocado – this tasty fruit is rich in monounsaturated fat, and is also found to increase the good cholesterol and lower the bad cholesterol, especially in people with high cholesterol levels.
Barley – a study of the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that adding barley to your diet can lower by up to twice the LDL levels.
Beans and lentils - another U.S. study found that adding lentils and beans to a diet low in fat enhanced twice its effectiveness.
Blueberries – blueberries contain a very powerful antioxidant that can prevent the damage caused by bad cholesterol. To learn more about the amazing healing properties of blueberries, as well as other berries, have a look at my e-book The Healing Berry Guide. This e-book will teach you how to transform your health with berries.
Oatmeal – a research conducted at the University of Toronto in Canada found that women who added oatmeal to a heart-healthy diet, increased by 11% the levels of good cholesterol in the body.
Alcohol (in moderation) – According to WebMD website, a few studies have found that people who drink alcohol in moderation have lower rates of heart disease, and might even live longer than those who don’t consume alcohol. In particular, red wine may offer the greatest benefit for lowering heart disease risk because it contains higher levels of natural plant chemicals, such as resveratrol, which have antioxidant properties and might protect artery walls. Many believe that the main cardiovascular benefit of alcohol is derived through its ability to raise HDL cholesterol levels. The research evidence points to ethanol, or the alcohol component, of beer, wine, or spirits as the substance that can help lower bad cholesterol levels and increase the good cholesterol.  WebMD recommends to choose whichever alcoholic beverage you enjoy, drink it in moderation and try to have it with meals. Please note – it is important to emphasize here the issue of dosage, and if you have any doubt, consult a nutritionist / doctor.
These tips are designed to adapt ourselves to a few more habits for improving our health, and as you can see, they don’t require a special effort. It is also advised to start to perform routine cholesterol tests and follow ups from the age of 30. In case of a medical problem, be sure to consult your doctor and adhere to his/her guidelines.

12 best foods to control diabetes
We all know that maintaining a healthy diet is vital in terms of diabetes prevention and treatment. Generally, the advice given to diabetics is relevant to the general population as well: consume adequate vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry and fish, and less industrial sweets and foods high in fat and salt.
It is known that patients who use professional advice and expert dieticians and nutritional supervision have a much better chance to maintain balanced levels of sugar, and avoid the complications of the disease. Diabetics should also keep meals at regular times throughout the day to avoid sharp rises in blood sugar levels.

So what are the best foods to control diabetes and add to the menu? There are 6 foods that can help balance blood sugar in your body. These are olive oil, cinnamon, green tea, pulses, green vegetables and oats. These common foods that are already in our kitchen help maintaining adequate blood sugar and prevent diabetes complications:

1. Olive oil

Oil lacks carbohydrates, and therefore does not raise blood sugar levels. In addition, it slows the absorption of foods eaten along with the oil. Olive oil is rich Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Also oil does not increase insulin levels, thus reducing the non-insulin tolerance that exists in many people and causes an increase in blood sugar levels. Find here more information about the great health benefits of olive oil.

2. Cinnamon

Many studies show that consumption of one teaspoon cinnamon (5 mg) to three teaspoons a day has a positive effect on reducing blood glucose levels. It was found that the cinnamon can make your cells more sensitive to insulin. Thus, the cells convert sugar into energy more efficiently and control the amount of sugar level in the blood. Diabetics who received cinnamon extract daily for 40 days experienced lower levels of blood sugar after eating, as well as substantial improvements to the heart health. Read here more about how to use cinnamon as a medicine.

3. Green tea

Green tea contains the antioxidant EGCG, which helps to maintain the flexibility of blood vessels and stabilizing blood glucose levels. A recent study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania found that this element reduces blood sugar levels and prevents its sharp rise after a meal consisting mainly carbohydrates. Read here more about the amazing health benefits of green tea.

4. Pulses

Legumes such as lentils, peas, beans and chickpeas are low in fat and calories and also rich in fiber and protein. Dietary fiber slows the rate of sugar absorption into the blood and reduces the glycemic load. They are a great addition to soups, salads and a variety of other dishes.

5. Green vegetables

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal fresh green leaves vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, spinach, Swiss chard and parsley, and other green vegetables  (fresh, steamed or frozen) such as celery, cucumber, cauliflower, green beans and kohlrabi contain carbohydrates that release hormones in the gut that reduce appetite. In addition, the researchers found that these vegetables improves insulin sensitivity and thus better regulate blood glucose levels. Eating vegetables like asparagus, garlic and Jerusalem artichoke can help in cases of diabetes and obesity, and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes because vegetables are rich in magnesium and are known as effective antioxidants.

6. Oatmeal

Oats contain a high percentage of fiber, B vitamins (especially B1), vitamin E and antioxidants. The large amount of fiber causes a slower absorption of glucose, and combining antioxidants makes the oatmeal recommended food to stabilize blood sugar levels. Click here to find easy and delicious porridge recipes with oatmeal.

7. Red Apples

A recent study conducted in Finland found that men who ate the greatest number of apples (and other foods rich in quercetin) had 20% less deaths related to diabetes or heart complications. Other good sources of quercetin are red grapes, tomatoes, onions, green vegetables and berries. You can find easy and nutritious berry recipes in my e-book The Healing The Healing Berry Guide. This e-book will teach you how to transform your health with berries, and is a must for berry lovers.

8.  Vitamin C rich foods

Studies show that people with diabetes have lower levels of vitamin C in their body, so rich foods in vitamin C such as berries, citrus fruits, peppers, dark green leafy vegetables, kiwifruit, tomatoes, etc are loaded with antioxidants and are an excellent choice.

9. Cold-water fish

Those who suffer from diabetes are twice more likely to suffer also from heart disease. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, can help to lower “bad “cholesterol and raise your “good” cholesterol. Seafood is a great source for omega 3, such as: halibut, herring, mackerel, oysters, salmon, sardines, trout, tuna and cod. Vegetables, especially green leafy ones, such as: kale, parsley, mint, Brussle sprouts, spinach and watercress, are rich in ALA, one form of omega-3 fatty acids (although ALA isn’t as powerful as the other omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA). Ground flaxseed is also a good source of omega 3. Read here more about the fantastic health benefits of omega 3.

10 . Dark Chocolate

Researchers from Tufts University in Massachusetts found that dark chocolate improves cell sensitivity to insulin and significantly improves the chances of avoiding diabetes. In addition, dark chocolate lowers blood pressure and the amount of “bad” cholesterol in the body, and strengthens the blood vessels.

11 . Grass fed beef

There are other things in beef other than protein, iron and vitamin B. There is an element which is part of the beef fat which is called CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). The most abundant source of CLA is beef from grass-fed cows. Experiments have shown that CLA works to correct improper utilization of blood sugar and helps fight cancer and heart disease. In a  recent study in Norway scientists have added a few grams of CLA to the daily diet of 180 people. They reported that they lost 9% of their body weight in one year. Make sure that the beed is processed as little as possible, as it contains more CLA. Other food sources of CLA in smaller amounts include milk and eggs.

12. Apple Cider vinegar (ACV)

According to webMD website, the effect of ACV on blood sugar levels is one of the best researched and the most promising. Several studies have found that vinegar may help lower glucose levels. For example, a small 2007 study with type 2 diabetes found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4%-6%.
In summary, these best foods to control diabetes should be added to your daily menu. You can start the day with oatmeal porridge flavored with cinnamon, eat for lunch grass fed beef with poached green vegetables, drink afternoon green tea alongside a red apple, and in the evening eat lentil soup. At bedtime drink another cup of green tea in order to lower blood sugar levels and calm the digestive system before going to sleep. 27-year-old Medical Student Auditioning Her Virginity Online For $550,000
A 27-year-old medical school student who is auctioning off her virginity online is now showing her face five weeks after making her project public.

The student, using the name “Elizabeth Raine” to protect her identity, has been running an online virginity auction since March 31. Bidding ends May 7.

Previously, Raine hid her face in photos and declined to answer questions that might reveal her true identity. She has decided to reveal her face to help attract bids from otherwise skeptical customers.

“I actually didn’t like the anonymity. People mistake it for shame,” she told The Huffington Post. “Plus, there has been some speculation that I’d be outed and I wanted to do it on my own terms.”

The current top bid listed on her website is $300,000, but she said she’s received bids near $550,000 that she’s in the process of confirming.

Raine may be showing her face, but she still fears getting kicked out of the medical school she attends if officials discover she is the “Med School Virgin.”

“Lawyers have different opinions on whether I’d get kicked out, but one lawyer I trust believes it won’t happen,” she said after providing The Huffington Post with passport photos, a student ID and other materials confirming her identity.

Raine claims to have bachelor’s degrees in both biology and engineering and is currently completing a combined MD/PhD program.

She was born in the southwest but spent much of her youth in Saudi Arabia where her father was employed in the oil industry.

Raine cites financial gain as the No. 1 reason for selling her alleged purity y, but adventure, eroticism, scandal and the chance to challenge norms about virginity also play into her decision.

“I’ve been planning this for a year and I’ve had a personal transformation because of it,” she said. “I’m more educated about prostitution, virginity and slut-shaming.”

Raine said her mother died when she was 10. Still, as tragic as that was, she dismisses dime store psychologists who want to use this incident to explain why she is a virgin.

“I am not emotionally damaged, broken or shut off as a result of it,” Raine said. “To the contrary, while it was truly devastating and the only difficult experience I have ever been through, my character and outlook on life are much better for it. I have become more compassionate, strong, motivated, and free in spirit. I have learned not to take life too seriously, but also not to take it for granted.”

In the past, Raine said, sex and relationships took a back seat to school and other interests.

“I have a busy life. I am picky and guys were never a priority,” she said. “I had other things going on.”

Raine cannot help but attract skeptics, given the problems experienced by previous Internet virgins like Natalie Dylan and Catarina Migliorini, who were associated with similar auctions.

However, she said she has been planning this auction for a year and believes everything is in place.

“I’m very cautious and detail-oriented,” she told HuffPost. “I have confidence that I can execute and control it.”

The winning bidder will have to provide Raine with proof that he has no sexually transmitted diseases and is willing to wear a condom. He also may not be under the influence of booze or drugs during the encounter, nor may he attempt BehindBased sex or treat her violently.

Raine said she’s is open to kissing the winning bidder, and even holds out a small amount of hope that it might lead to something more.

“I wouldn’t rule out love, but it’s very unlikely,” Raine said.

Raine admits she does have a thing for older men and tall guys, but those factors probably won’t come into play for what is basically a business deal.

And she is not interested in losing her virginity to another woman, no matter how financially lucrative the bid might be.

“I’m straight. That would be out of my comfort zone,” she said.

In order to circumvent U.S. laws prohibiting prostitution, Raine said the actual sex experience will take place in Australia, where it is legal.

As much as Raine has been trying to control all aspects of the virgin auction, she realizes the quality of the actual sex is not something she can guarantee.

“There will be a legal contract between us,” she said. “[The winner] may not be happy [with the sex], but he knows what he’s paying for.”

Donald Sterling

The Magic Picture

EXCLUSIVE
Donald Sterling Magic Johnson

This is the picture that triggered the conversation between L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his girlfriend ... the conversation in which he said he did not want her bringing Magic Johnson or any other African American to his games.

In the pic -- obtained by TMZ Sports -- V. Stiviano is on the right.  The woman on the left is V's friend, Rachel Rodriguez.

Stiviano says on the audio -- and Sterling acknowledges -- he made her take the pic off Instagram because he didn't want her seen in public with an African American.

In another tape ... Sterling expressed similar disdain for posting this pic (above) -- also obtained by TMZ Sports -- of Stiviano with L.A. Dodger Matt Kemp.

Both pics were taken months ago -- apparently at Dodger Stadium -- but she posted them only recently and then took them down at Sterling's behest.

Los Angeles Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Banned For Life, Fined $2.5 Million!!

Donald Sterling has been banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million for his racist comments caught on tape.
Addressing the issue in a strongly worded press conference Tuesday afternoon, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said:
The man whose voice is heard on the recording and a second recording IS Mr. Sterling. And that the hateful opinions voiced by that man are by Mr. Sterling. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage.
Accordingly effective immediately I am banning Mr. Sterling for LIFE with any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. He may not attend any NBA games or any practices. Sterling would be barred from attending NBA board of Governor’s meetings or participating in any other league activity.”
Adam Silver also said he was financially punishing Sterling with a “$2.5 million the maximum amount allowed in the NBA constitution.” That while Sterling still owns the Clippers, Silver said he would “Urge the Board of Governor’s to force Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team and will do everything in my power to ensure that happens.”

Silver ended saying “We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views. They simply have no place in the NBA.”

Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, had come under fire for comments in a recording attributed to him, where a man asked his girlfriend, Vanessa Stiviano, a woman of Mexican descent, not to broadcast her association with black people or bring black people to games.

Nigerian Film-Maker And Nollywood Icon Amaka Igwe Is Dead

Nigerian film-maker and Nollywood icon Amaka Igwe has shockingly passed on at 51.
A spokesperson for Amaka Igwe studios told NET the sad incident occurred in Enugu where she had gone, in company of her husband, for pre-production preparations for a new Igbo soap.
‘She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial interventions had failed. She passed on before getting to the hospital’, a statement issued this morning read.
Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Asthma attacks are triggered by a number of environmental and genetic interactions and usually come unannounced. Mrs Igwe is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children, an aged mother, siblings and a large extended family. Mrs Igwe’s last major outing was at the inaugural edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference held on April 26, 2013 at the Grand Ball Room of Eko Hotels and Suites. Participating as a keynote speaker, Mrs Igwe delivered a speech on the ‘Reflections from an unapologetic commercial Nollywood filmmaker’.
Born Amaka Isaac-Ene, the deceased was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher. She is the founder of BoBTV Expo, founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly-launched Q Entertainment Networks. The Lagos mainland based Top Radio station was launched years ago, with preparations underway to launch Q Networks, a DSTV channel in a few weeks.
A visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film, she hit national limelight as the writer and producer of award-winning TV soap ‘Checkmate’ and its off shoot ‘Fuji House of Commotion’. Her Nollywood projects include RattleSnake and Violated – two critically-acclaimed movies that set apart Amaka Igwe Studios in the much-criticised Nollywood industry.
Amaka Igwe studied Education/Religion at the University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo University). She had a Master’s Degree from the University of Ibadan.
She had her early education at All Saints School (Now Trans Ekulu Primary School), Girls High School Awkunanaw, Enugu and Idia College, Benin. Interestingly, Amaka Igwe wanted to study law but officials of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) offered her a chance to study Education and Religious Study instead.
From OAU, Mrs Igwe signed the MNET short celluloid film ‘Barbers Wisdom’ as director and then proceeded to the University of Ibadan where she grabbed a master degree in Library and Information Services.
She married her longtime partner Charles Igwe in 1993. They had three kids together – Ruby, David and Daniel. She worked as a lecturer at the Anambra State University of Technology and briefly in oil and Gas, before settling for the motion picture industry. Mrs Igwe will be remembered for raising the bar in movie and TV production in Nigeria, creating high standards with her company Amaka Igwe Studios at a time when Nollywood wasn’t taken serious, for not conforming to low standards as a means to achieving success and inspiring many Nigerian movie makers….

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Slams Donald Sterling’s Mistress For Her ‘Betrayal

kaj
NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who is known for speaking out on issues of race in the United States, has weighed in on the alleged racist ramblings of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
Jabbar agreed that Sterling is clearly racist, but was more incensed by not only systems of oppression that breed the Donald Sterlings of the world, but the actions of Sterling’s mistress, V. Stiviano.
Read more from Time Magazine:
Yes, I’m angry, too, but not just about the sins of Donald Sterling. I’ve got a list. But let’s start with Sterling. I used to work for him, back in 2000 when I coached for the Clippers for three months. He was congenial, even inviting me to his daughter’s wedding. Nothing happened or was said to indicate he suffered from IPMS (Irritable Plantation Master Syndrome). Since then, a lot has been revealed about Sterling’s business practices:
  • 2006: U.S. Dept. of Justice sued Sterling for housing discrimination. Allegedly, he said, “Black tenants smell and attract vermin.”
  • 2009: He reportedly paid $2.73 million in a Justice Dept. suit alleging he discriminated against blacks, Hispanics, and families with children in his rentals. (He also had to pay an additional nearly $5 million in attorneys fees and costs due to his counsel’s “sometimes outrageous conduct.”)
  • 2009: Clippers executive (and one of the greatest NBA players in history) sued for employment discrimination based on age and race.
And now the poor guy’s girlfriend (undoubtedly ex-girlfriend now) is on tape cajoling him into revealing his racism. Man, what a winding road she led him down to get all of that out. She was like a sexy nanny playing “pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.” She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.
They caught big game on a slow news day, so they put his head on a pike, dubbed him Lord of the Flies, and danced around him whooping.
Make no mistake: Donald Sterling is the villain of this story. But he’s just a handmaiden to the bigger evil. In our quest for social justice, we shouldn’t lose sight that racism is the true enemy. He’s just another jerk with more money than brains.
So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.

Chibok Attack: Abducted Girls Reportedly Conveyed Through Gwoza - Gwoza Resident

With some 187 girls still missing two weeks after they were abducted from a school in north-eastern Nigeria, the government is under growing pressure, reports BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross.

The agonising wait goes on. Almost two weeks after they were driven away from their boarding school in the town in the middle of the night, parents are desperate for news of their daughters.

A resident of the small town of Gwoza in the remote north-east said on 25 April she saw a convoy of 11 vehicles painted in military colours carrying many girls.

This will be of little comfort to the parents as it suggests at least some are now even further from home, close to the Cameroonian border.

The fact that Islamist fighters from the Boko Haram group are still able to move across parts of Borno state in convoys points to the severe limitations of the current military strategy.

'Eerie echo'

With thousands of extra troops deployed in the main cities of the north and with the emergence of civilian defence forces or vigilante groups especially in Maiduguri, Boko Haram was under pressure and was forced to change tactics. But this has instead brought the deadliest phase of the conflict with incessant attacks on poorly defended rural villages and smaller towns.

About 1,500 people were killed in the first three months of 2014, according to Amnesty International.

And the Maiduguri barracks attack last month, as well as the Abuja bomb blast on the same day the girls were abducted, show that the insurgents are not entirely confined to rural areas.

Even for those girls who managed to escape during the first few hours of the abduction there is no peace of mind.

"I'm so sad now because when I'm at home I think about all my school friends who are there in the bush," one 18-year-old told me from her home in Chibok town, where the abductions took place.

"I hope they are set free. We are all praying for God to release them so they come back home."
'Evil'

The attack is an eerie echo of a mass abduction in northern Uganda back in 1996. A total of 139 girls aged between 11 and 16 were seized from dormitories at St Mary's School in Aboke.

They were tied together with rope and were taken away by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), which says it is fighting for a state based on the Biblical 10 Commandments. So, same terror tactics, different religion.

In an extraordinary act of bravery the headmistress, Sister Rachele Fassera, followed them into the bush and managed to rescue 109 of them.

The rest were forced to become so-called wives of the rebel commanders. Most of the "Aboke Girls" escaped and returned years later as young mothers. But at least four of them never came home.

In Nigeria there was such utter confusion and terror after the attack on Chibok School that several days later it was still not clear how many girls were missing.

There cannot be many countries where the political leaders stay as silent following such a tragedy. So far, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has said more about the Chibok attack than Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan.

On Friday, a presidential advisor told the BBC the incident was "unfortunate, embarrassing and evil".

"The fact that some of them have been rescued raises our hope that with more effort, the objective of bringing them to safety and to their parents will be achieved," said Reuben Abati.

But they were not rescued by the military. They escaped.

'Pentecostal polemics'

Mr Abati said the security forces "deserve continuous motivation for them to do even more".

Few would disagree with that thought but there are doubts over whether the soldiers tasked with fighting Boko Haram are getting the support they need from their own bosses.

"We are in a difficult situation. We are under-equipped we do not have the required weapons," a soldier deployed to Borno State told the BBC last month. "This problem is not from us at the front line but from our superiors. We, the soldiers, have the courage to confront Boko Haram but we do not have sufficient weapons."

"You cannot confront someone with more sophisticated weapons than you. It is not our superiors doing the fighting - we are the ones at the front line," he said.

"So we have to consider our families our parents and when we go there and get killed, what becomes of our families?"

As has been the case with the long war against the LRA in Uganda, some analysts in Nigeria question whether the possibility of making vast amounts of money from the opaque security funds is a hindrance to ending the bloodshed.

'Goat pen'

Nigeria's budget for security this year is more than $6bn (£3.5bn) - double the allocation for education.

"The budget for defence is increasing but we don't see that translating into better kit and security personnel…. so in a lot of ways the question is asked whether the resources that are budgeted for security are actually going into equipping the military to be prepared for this," said Clement Nwankwo, a policy analyst.

The police are also supposed to play a key role in protecting civilians. If they were well resourced, the streets might not be plagued at night by policemen waving torches and begging for handouts from motorists. "Only through black magic could anybody feed his wife and four children for 30 days with the kind of salary the Nigeria Police pays me," the online publication quoted a policeman as saying.

The same article says the Police Training School in the north-eastern state of Bauchi quotes officers saying they no longer get issued with a uniform but have to buy them from the local market.

The violence in the north-east has been relentless this year but the kidnapping of the girls from Chibok and the focus on their plight has definitely caused more Nigerians, wherever they live, to question their own safety.

"If they can't protect them up there in the north-east, why would they be able to protect us here," is how one Lagos resident put it.

This is a religious country but for some the insecurity is now beyond prayers.

Nigeria's Premium Times newspaper has just done an expose on how poorly looked after the police are.

"Nigerian citizens have been waiting in vain for an effective decisive action from the presidency beside the usual: 'We condemn this act…' But the president is waxing strong in his Pentecostal polemics and total reliance on prayers to solve the country's security failings," says Nigerian writer Victor Ehikhamenor.

"Nigeria is a highly spiritual country and its past and present leaders know this and have manipulated it to their benefit," he says.

"However, the current administration has taken it to a new height where God is expected to actually physically solve all the country's debilitating problems from terrorism to corruption to fixing dilapidated infrastructures."

Many of the politicians are more focused on the blame game than coming up with solutions and with elections due early next year, the violence could have political consequences.

The north-east is an opposition stronghold - the states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, where an emergency has been declared, are all under the control of the All Progressive Congress.

"Not holding polls in the north-east, or reducing their scope, could create political chaos, with the opposition rejecting a close unfavourable national tally. It is also feared that Boko Haram could escalate attacks to undermine the elections," says the International Crisis Group (ICG) in its latest report on the insecurity plaguing Nigeria.

"It overstretches federal security services, with no end in sight, spills over to other parts of the north and risks reaching Niger and Cameroon, weak countries poorly equipped to combat a radical Islamist armed group tapping into real governance, corruption, impunity and underdevelopment grievances shared by most people in the region," says the ICG.

People are trying to ensure that the tragedy of the abducted school girls is not yet another attack that is swiftly forgotten hence the trending of #BringBackOurGirls and #WhereAreOurGirls on Twitter.

But given the current insecurity in the north-east it is not a question of "if" but "when" and "where" the insurgents will strike next.
Fg Gives Aero Contractors 30 Days To Compensate Passengers
The Federal government through the office of the Consumers Protection Agency (CPC) on Monday gave the management of Aero contractors 30 days within which to compensate 39 passengers whose flight were cancelled and left to sleep over at the airport on November 8, 2013.

The passengers were booked to leave Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja to Lagos by 6pm on the said date but were left stranded overnight at the airport.
Speaking in Lagos yesterday, director general of CPC, Mrs Dupe Atoki, the affected 39 passengers are to be paid N1.579 million being the cost of reliefs that should have been provided during the period of delay as well as 25 per cent of passengers' ticket value for the cancellation of the flight without notice in line with the Passenger Bill Right (PBR).
Atoki said if the airline failed to pay the compensation within the stipulated period, its managing director would be prosecuted and risk three years jail term

Obama to announce new sanctions against Russia over Ukraine crisis

Full list of targets to be published on Monday expected to include wealthy individuals with close ties to Vladimir Putin

Link to video: Barack Obama announces new sanctions against Russia over Ukraine
Barack Obama has said the United States will levy new sanctions against Russian individuals and companies in retaliation for Moscow's alleged provocations in Ukraine.
Obama said the targets of the sanctions would include hi-tech exports to Russia's defence industry, as he seeks to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin, the Russian president.
The full list of targets, which will be announced by officials in Washington on Monday, is also expected to include wealthy individuals close to Putin.
"The goal here is not to go after Mr Putin personally," Obama said. "The goal is to change his calculus with respect to how the current actions that he's engaging in could have an adverse impact on the Russian economy over the long haul."
Obama announced the sanctions during a news conference in the Philippines, his final stop on a four-country Asia tour.
White House officials say they decided last week to impose the new sanctions after deciding that Russia had not lived up to its commitments under a fragile diplomatic accord aimed at easing the crisis in Ukraine. But the US held off on implementing the sanctions in order to co-ordinate its actions with the EU, which could also announce new penalties as early as Monday.
The failed diplomatic accord reached in Geneva called on the Kremlin to use its influence to get pro-Russian insurgents to leave the government buildings they have occupied in eastern Ukraine. But those forces have not left the buildings and have also stepped up their provocations, including capturing European military observers.
Even as he announced the new sanctions package, Obama acknowledged that "we don't yet know whether it's going to work".
In eastern Ukraine, the situation remained jittery after pro-Russia militants holding the European observers paraded them in front of the world's media on Sunday as "prisoners of war".
AFP reporters said gunmen were increasingly aggressive at checkpoints and occupied buildings in the flashpoint eastern Ukraine town of Slavyansk, one of a handful under control of pro-Kremlin rebels.
Meanwhile heavily armed gunmen on Monday seized control of the town hall in nearby Kostyantynivka, according to an AFP reporter on the scene, the latest in a string of about a dozen towns and cities in south-eastern Ukraine to fall under the control of pro-Russian insurgents over the past few weeks.
There are fears of a full-scale invasion, with tens of thousands of Russian troops massed on the border and Ukraine's prime minister warning of efforts to start a "third world war".
As the west stepped up the rhetoric ahead of the sanctions announcement, the French foreign minister Laurent Fabius warned the Ukraine crisis could yet have "incalculable consequences".
On Monday, EU officials are to meet to thrash out a new set of sanctions likely to include asset freezes and travel bans.
Diplomats in Brussels have already agreed in principle to add 15 people to a blacklist of 55 Russians and Ukrainians.
The G7 has vowed to act "swiftly" to raise the pressure on Russia, where the economy is already contracting.
Speaking on his tour of Asia, Obama said it was vital to avoid "falling into the trap of interpreting this as the US is trying to pull Ukraine out of Russia's orbit, circa 1950. Because that's not what this is about."
The west has already imposed visa and travel restrictions on key members of Putin's inner circle and slapped sanctions on a top bank.
But some fear that undermining Russia's economy could tip the world back into recession, just as it begins to recover from the effects of the eurozone debt crisis.
Reflecting these jitters, stocks in Japan closed nearly 1% lower and the yen – seen as a safe haven against uncertainty – gained ground against the dollar.
However, the former Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky said the sanctions would have "no short-term effect" on the Russian economy and would take three or four years to really hurt Putin.
In Slavyansk, intense negotiations continued to secure the release of a team of the seven monitors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) captured by pro-Russian rebels. Germany, in command of the mission, said parading the observers in front of the world's media was "repugnant".
Speaking in Slavyansk town hall and watched by four armed guards and the self-styled mayor, Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, the group's leader, German officer Axel Schneider, told reporters they were in good health.
One of the group, a Swedish monitor, was released late Sunday on medical grounds as he suffers from diabetes and a team of OSCE negotiators was in talks to free the rest.
But the rebels have described them as "Nato spies" and "prisoners of war" and refused to release them except as part of an exchange for their own detained militants.
OSCE chairman and Swiss president Didier Burkhalter said his organisation was working "at all levels" to secure their release.
The German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said the presentation of the detained OSCE men in front of the press was "a violation of all negotiating rules and norms that prevail in tense situations like this one".
The monitors were in Ukraine to assess progress towards implementing the deal struck in Geneva on 17 April.
The rebels are also holding three Ukrainian soldiers captured near Slavyansk. Russian television showed the men blindfolded, bloodied and stripped to their underwear.
The fate of four Ukrainians travelling with the OSCE group is also unknown, as they did not appear at the news conference with the eight Europeans – four Germans, a Dane, a Czech, a Pole and the Swede who was later released.

Boycott Game 5! Smack Donald Sterling With the Greatest Protest in Sports History.

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling
Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling

If you have a ticket to Game 5 of the Golden State Warriors-Los Angeles Clippers NBA playoff series Tuesday night in L.A.’s Staples Center, stay home. Make your presence felt by your absence. I know it sounds like a paradox, but not being there for them is the most emphatic support you could give Clippers coach Doc Rivers and his players.
As you most likely already know, Donald Sterling, an 81-year-old billionaire and longtime owner of the Clippers, was allegedly caught on tape making racist comments to his mistress, V. Stiviano. Sterling can be heard going full-Cliven Bundy on the tapes, telling Stiviano, for instance, “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on [Instagram] ... and not to bring them to my games.”
Sterling was, at the time, a married man dating a woman over 50 years his junior, who also happens to be of black and Mexican lineage. Integrity is not The Sterling’s long suit; hypocrisy is. Or, as Kenny Smith said on TNT’s Inside the NBA in the witching hours of Monday morning, “You can be rich in money but not rich in life.”
Sterling’s first-years head coach, Glenn “Doc” Rivers, is African-American and a proven winner in the league, and you probably know that his two All-Stars, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, who are also the league’s most visible players by far on television ads, are of full or partial African-American lineage. You might also know that the Clippers—only one non-black player, J.J. Redick, receives significant playing time—modestly protested before Game 4 at Golden State by wearing their warm-ups inside out (to hide the “Clippers” insignia) and then leaving them at midcourt. The latter aspect of that protest seemed, more than anything, a display of disrespect toward the team’s equipment manager, Pete Serrano. He’s the guy who had to pick up all the unwanted laundry.
Finally, it is important to recognize that the players and coaching staff are in an untenable position regarding any larger protest, one that might put both their contracts and season (oh, did we mention that heretofore this had been the most successful season in franchise history?) in jeopardy.
The Clippers cannot boycott Game 5, but you can. There are competing schools of thoughts on this idea, so let’s explore them. The first view states that the players and Rivers had nothing to do with Sterling’s ignorance and hatred, so why should fans desert them now? That’s a laudable sentiment, especially in light of Rivers’ comments after the Clippers’ 21-point Game 4 defeat—their most lopsided loss since January 4, by the way. It was Rivers who said, “We’re going home now. Usually that would mean we’re going to our safe haven. And I don’t even know if that’s true.” The Clippers wore their warm-up clothes inside out in protest of owner Donald Sterling's racist comments
Hence, the obvious move for fans is to arrive at Staples and cheer even more vociferously for the Clippers as they strive to take a 3-2 lead in the first-round series. Support the players and Rivers, who are unwitting victims of their owner being a hopelessly incurable troglodyte and racist.
Here’s the problem with that: Who’d be able to tell the difference? Staples Center was sold out for Games 1 and 2 of this series. The fans, almost to a person, donned red T-shirts proclaiming, “Clipper Nation All In.” Raising the volume of support, from my perspective, doesn’t illustrate that you find Sterling’s continued ownership of this team offensive as much as it tells me that you really enjoy watching NBA games in person.
However, to not attend the game, en masse—now that would speak volumes. That would tell Griffin; Paul; and fellow teammates DeAndre Jordan, Matt Barnes, Darren Collison, Jamal Crawford, Glen Davis, Danny Granger, Jared Dudley, Ryan Hollins and Willie Green, all of whom are of African-American descent, that Sterling’s words inspired you to action. Also, that they inspired you to sacrifice something that you enjoy: the NBA.
Imagine a completely vacant NBA arena hosting an NBA playoff game. How could the TNT announcers not make note of it and its implications? And if any one fan were to think for even a moment that the Clipper players would misconstrue it as a lack of support for them, this is why Twitter exists. We no longer live in a world in which such a protest would be misinterpreted.
Sacrifice is the ultimate display of respect, or loyalty. How many times do we hear of an athlete, or a team, or a league justifying a problematic game with the rationale “that’s what the deceased would have wanted” and think to ourselves, No, that’s what you wanted. Nothing says sincerity better than self-abnegation.
A sea of Clippers fans gathering outside Staples Center during Game 5 in peaceful protest as the game takes place in cavernous silence would be a powerful message. Imagine 19,570 vacant seats inside the venue; it would be the greatest fan protest in the history of professional sports. In a sport that is more than 70 percent African-American, why shouldn’t every Clippers ticket holder embrace the stance of Magic Johnson, who says he will never again attend a Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the franchise?
Tuesday is April 29, by the way. The 22nd anniversary of the Rodney King verdict, which led to the ugliest race riots that Los Angeles, and the United States, has witnessed since the 1960s. Honor that anniversary. Do something that people will remember long after they are able to recall who won this playoff series or even who won the NBA Finals this year.
For one game, at least, can’t we all just stay at home? Let them play. But stay away.
